Relay vs Housecall Pro

Housecall Pro and Relay both cover the core home-service workflow. They differ in how work gets placed onto the schedule, how maintenance gets booked, what technicians can do without signal, how physical inventory is tracked, and how the product is packaged.

Where the systems differ

Scheduling before the promise

Housecall Pro online booking looks for available time based on booking hours, service duration, and employee availability. Its route optimizer can rearrange jobs within one technician's scheduled day to reduce drive time, while respecting jobs that have been locked in place.

Relay considers the route before offering an appointment. It matches the work to qualified technicians, compares the additional travel created by different placements, and can shift flexible work to produce a better schedule while preserving fixed times and customer arrival windows.

The same scheduling engine powers office, online, and eligible maintenance booking, and can build the day's schedule from unscheduled work.

Maintenance scheduling

Both systems track maintenance plans and the equipment they cover. Housecall Pro keeps upcoming unscheduled Service Plan visits in a queue and can remind customers to contact the business to schedule.

In Relay, when maintenance comes due, the customer can book that specific eligible visit through a link. The appointment stays tied to the plan and any covered equipment, and the times offered come from the same availability engine used by the office and online booking.

Offline field work

Housecall Pro's offline mode is view-only. Technicians can view downloaded jobs, appointments, and checklists, but changes require a connection.

Relay's mobile app was built offline-first. Today's work, customer information, and the pricebook stay available on the device, so technicians can keep working through the visit without a connection: updating the job, creating estimates and invoices, and capturing estimate approvals and signatures. Changes sync automatically when they're back online.

Native physical inventory

Housecall Pro tracks materials used on jobs and integrates with Ply for broader truck and warehouse inventory management.

Relay tracks physical stock natively across warehouses and trucks, including serialized units. Transfers update where stock is held, while materials used on jobs reduce inventory and connect their cost to the work.

Pricing works differently

$99/month. Every Relay feature included, unlimited users, a business phone system, and no contract.

Housecall Pro offers several plans with different included features and user limits. Its Voice phone system is sold separately. Compare Housecall Pro's current plans.

Relay includes 100 AI voice minutes per month. Additional AI voice usage and payment processing are billed separately. See Relay pricing.

Which fits your operation?

Housecall Pro may fit better if

  • You want a mature home-service platform with a large integration ecosystem.
  • You rely on a Housecall Pro integration, report, or workflow Relay does not currently support.
  • You use adjacent products such as payroll, accounting services, financing, or marketing tools in the same ecosystem.

Relay may fit better if

  • You want customers to book eligible upcoming maintenance visits without the office scheduling each one.
  • You want the work, technician, route, and customer promise considered together before a time is offered.
  • Your technicians need to keep working jobs where there is no signal.
  • You want warehouse and truck inventory, including serialized stock, managed with the work that consumes it.
  • You prefer one plan with all features and unlimited users over choosing among tiers and add-ons.

Before switching

Can I bring my Housecall Pro data to Relay?

Relay can work from Housecall Pro exports during guided onboarding. We review which records and fields can move before you switch, rather than promising a one-click transfer of everything in your account.

Does Relay support Service Plans?

Yes. Relay supports maintenance plans with included visits and recurring billing, including coverage for specific equipment. When an eligible visit comes due, the customer can be invited to schedule it themselves.

What would I give up by switching from Housecall Pro?

Housecall Pro has a larger integration ecosystem and adjacent products built up over many years. Check the integrations, reports, marketing tools, financing workflows, and specialized capabilities your business depends on before switching. Relay may not cover every one of them.

How does pricing compare?

Relay has one $99/month plan with every feature and unlimited users. Housecall Pro offers multiple plans and separately sold products. Compare the current plan and products your business would use.
